The lesser focus on 2D gameplay for Modern Sonic was a great choice, as it was put onto Classic Sonic's levels to have fun 2D platforming (not exactly Genesis physics, but the level design and tight control make up for it ).

This lead to Modern Sonic to be one of the funnest Sonic gameplay styles in the series controls that consistently worked and level design that is a smart mix of speed and platforming. Modern Sonic hands down has the best 3D stages in the franchise (next to the speed levels in Adventure 1 and 2) not tight but solid controls that allow for better platforming, leading to more open levels that either slightly use the 3D (Chemical Plant Modern's three different path ways at the start those side paths aren't for show, you can run on them !), have tighter speed-oriented sections (Modern Rooftop Run, Speed Highway and Crisis City) or flat out pure 3D platforming that is reminiscent to the Dreamcast era (Modern Seaside Hill, Sky Sanctuary). Sonic Generations did a smart thing though, shift 2D and 3D across the different Sonic's. I do wish Colors had more 3D though the controls for 3D in Colors was an improvement over Unleashed's Day levels, so it would of been nice for it to be used more. This lead to great level design that used each perspective very well. Sonic Colors understood how to make Sonic work when in 3D you go fast ala Unleashed and when you had to do platforming or use the Wisp power ups, you shift to 2D where control is more precise. it was just that each game had a greater focus on different things :l. Well, both games had great speed sections.
